Besides the charm of the house itself, my favorite thing has to be the neighbors and the neighborhood. This is the house I grew up in. I’ve seen a lot of changes over the years, but one thing that’s remained the same is the charm of the neighborhood and the friendliness of the neighbors. I’ll miss them when I move, but I know we’ll keep in touch, and that you’ll enjoy getting to know them and making them your friends.
I love how perfectly situated Lake Claire is. It’s quiet, but also close to so much, including downtown Decatur and Oakhurst to the east, and “downtown Candler Park,” Krog Street, and the Old Fourth Ward to the west. Candler Park itself is just a mile away. The deli in the back of Candler Park Market has the best soups and burgers in all of Atlanta.
I love my garden. The back yard is quite long, and some years ago, I did a full- on re-landscaping project. I had previously landscaped it, but it had long since become overgrown. This time, I hired out most of the hard work, saving the fun things for me, plopping in ferns and Lenten roses, heuchera, and astilbe. The garden is such a refuge now. I love watching the birds at the feeder, listening to the burble of the fountain, and watching my dog chase squirrels.
Of course, I love the house itself. So many of the original features and details remain, including the crown molding, glass doorknobs, and hardwood floors, which are still solid and in great shape. We never did do a major remodel like many of our neighbors have, though my parents did convert the attic into a bedroom. My father had the whole basement waterproofed a long time ago, with rubber barriers glued to the exterior walls and French drains installed, and it’s been dry ever since. I only use it for storage now, but it would make a great workshop or even a wine cellar.
Although I’ll miss this little house, it’s time for me to move on to my next chapter. Living here again has been such a gift, making it my own while honoring its past. I hope that you will have as many wonderful years here as I have and create just as many wonderful memories. Oh, and if you do decide to do some major remodeling, that’s totally fine! It’s probably time for 2112 to move on to its next chapter as well.
